Maui December 2021 & 1st Half January 2022

On December 5th Maui was hit by a strong Kona Storm that wiped out a number of my favourite snorkel spots, not to mention a number of beaches, roads, parks, homes and cars.  Six weeks later the sea is still acting out. We woke to a tsunami warning this morning January 15, 2022.  I have managed to get into the water twice in January and that was by heading down to La Perouse Bay — often rough and windy, but protected from the “out of season” WSW swells that have been hitting our coastline for a couple of weeks.  Newest predicament is avoiding Jeff Bezos’ privately owned fish pond (yes you can own culturally important fish ponds in Hawaii).  So this is a strange record of “before the big storm”, “mid-storms while avoiding North Kihei altogether” and “avoiding SW swell storms.”  Still some precious gifts from the sea.
