Reaching 9 inches, the Threadfin Butterflyfish is one of the larger species of butterflyfish on Maui, and one of the most common (to 9 inches). Juveniles are often seen in lagoons, fishponds and intertidal zones, while mature individuals are seen on the coastal coral reefs, as well as on sand and “pavement.” They feed on coral polyps, algae, polychaete worms and other small invertebrates. These fish are most often seen in pairs. An aggregation is a rare treat. According to the IUCN Redlist, their numbers have been noticeably depleted in areas of significant coral loss. Though “not a species of concern” it is a species to definitely watch as the coral of Maui is facing two consecutive years of bleaching events.
