photocrati galleryThe Lemon, Citron or Speckled Butterflyfish is an extremely rare sight on the reefs of Maui.  While it is easily mistaken for a Milletseed Butterflyfish at first, closer inspection will reveal some significant differences.   These fish are corallivores but they also feed on algae, benthic invertebrates and polychaete worms.  The images here were taken of the same fish in the same place a few weeks apart.  This particular butterflyfish did not travel much once he or she arrived in the shallow surge zone of Maluaka, S. Maui.   Link to IUCN Redlist for more information about its wider range. It is apparently a common sight on the Great Barrier Reef  and various other parts of Indian Ocean.
