More than anything this site is devoted to looking at the coastal margins of British Columbia and Maui. As a warm water and cold water snorkeler/underwater photographer and videographer I only have access to the intertidal zones and a visibility of about 30 ft. Many fish identification sites are created by divers who have access to more fish, more diversity. But they also are driven by time. A snorkeler has the opportunity to stop and stay a while -- a long while, to observe from a more limited perspective.
As a volunteer for marine conservation organizations, I often have snorkelers describe a fish from the top down or from behind as that is all they have seen. So I have included a number of top-down and backside images in the hopes these photographs will help the novice snorkeler identify the fish that flew by or ducked under a coral head too quickly.
